New York - UPI
Carmelo Anthony made four of New York's 19 long-range shots Friday and scored 30 points in sending the Knicks to an emotional 104-84 decision over Miami. The Knicks and the Heat took part in the first major sporting event in the New York area since the death and destruction brought to the city by Hurricane Sandy. Despite the difficulty that still exists in getting around the metropolitan area, a near capacity crowd showed up at Madison Square Garden and witnessed a 3-point barrage from the Knicks. New York hit 19-of-36 from beyond the arc, opened a 16-point lead after one period and maintained a solid cushion for the rest of the game. Steve Novak added 17 points for the Knicks in their season opener, Raymond Felton had 14 and point guard Jason Kidd scored 12 in his New York debut. New York had originally been scheduled to begin its season on Thursday against Brooklyn, but that game was postponed due to the storm's devastation. The New York Marathon set for this Sunday has been canceled and will not be rescheduled. Miami put on an impressive performance in opening its season with a win over Boston, but the Heat turned the ball over nine more times than did the Knicks and grabbed just seven offensive rebounds. LeBron James scored 23 points for Miami and Dwyane Wade had 15.
