No. 3-seeded Thomas Berdych dropped only two games Wednesday in earning a quarterfinals position at the China Open tennis tournament in Beijing. Berdych defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2, 6-0 in just more than an hour. It was the sixth time in seven career meetings that Berdych beat Kohlschreiber. Berdych lost 11 points in his seven service games with four of those coming in the lone break he suffered. He broke Kohlschreiber's serve six times in seven games. Berdych and No. 1-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are the only seeded players remaining in the men's China Open draw. Tsonga goes against local favorite Zhang Ze in a second-round match Thursday. Wednesday's other three second-round matches all went three sets. Fernando Verdasco earned the quarterfinals slot against Berdych with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Flavio Cipolla. Verdasco won two-thirds of the points after the first set. Another quarterfinal match was set after wins by Ivan Ljubicic and Mikhail Youzhny. Ljubicic took out Florian Mayer 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 while Youzhny advanced with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 7-5 win over Feliciano Lopez.
