Washington - UPI

Novak Djokovic officially moved into the No. 1 spot in the world men's tennis rankings, a position he'll hold at least through the end of the year. Djokovic, who was also the year-end top-ranked player in 2011, moved up after Roger Federer dropped 2,850 rankings points. To put that figure in perspective, No. 10-ranked Richard Gasquet has 2,515 points. The fall is dramatic. Djokovic had his first stint at No. 1 ended July 9 by Federer. At that point, Djokovic had been on top for 53 weeks, which is tied for the 11th longest such string. His total of 54 weeks at No. 1 is 12th most, four behind Jim Courier for 11th. Federer owns the records with a 237-consecutive-week run at No. 1 and 301 weeks overall. Djokovic has 11,420 points and Federer, who is again this week defending the champion's points in the ATP World Tour Finals, has 9,465. Andy Murray sits in third with 7,600 and Rafael Nadal, out with a knee injury, is fourth with 6,795. David Ferrer, after winning the Paris Masters, is fifth with 6,030 points and Tomas Berdych has 4,405 points for sixth. Juan Martin del Potro (4,080) comes in seventh and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga takes the No. 8 place with 3,490 points. Janko Tipsarevic has 2,990 points, which is ninth most, and Gasquet comes in with 2,515. Nicolas Almagro also has 2,515 points but he's played four more tournaments than Gasquet and so is left at No. 11. Ferrer defeated qualifier Jerzy Janowicz for the Paris Masters title. Janowicz started the year ranked No. 221 and was No. 69 a week ago but his strong run in Paris lifts him to 26th this week. The 600 rankings points he collected in the Masters event is nearly half his 1,300-point total.
