London - AFP
England international Danny Care has extended his contract with Premiership champions Harlequins that is set to keep the scrum-half at the club until 2016, the team's director of rugby Conor O'Shea confirmed on Tuesday. The 25-year-old, who has struggled with alcohol problems, has made 33 appearances for England and scored a try in a man-of-the-match performance against South Africa last June in a Test match that finished 14-14. "For Danny to commit to us for this length of time is news that everyone at the club is delighted about," O'Shea said. "I'm looking forward to watching Danny's continuing development both on and off the pitch over coming seasons and to seeing him become the player that we all know he can be." Care was dropped from England's Six Nations' squad last season following his arrest for drink-driving in the early hours of New Year's Day, which saw him banned from driving for 16 months and fined 3,100 pounds (3,900 euros, 4,890 dollars). Quins also slapped him with a 10,000-pound fine for a previous arrest for being drunk and disorderly but he recently announced he had given up alcohol in order to rebuild his international career. Care rose up through the England ranks from under-16 level in 2003 to make his senior debut in 2008 when he came on during the 37-20 defeat against New Zealand at Eden Park. "There is no other club that I want to play for so I'm pleased to extend my contract with Harlequins," Care said. "I'm enjoying being part of a talented squad that is playing an attractive and successful style of rugby. "Winning trophies is why we play professional rugby and having tasted some success in that regard, I would like more."
