Ex-OSU star Stillwagon charged in shooting

Former Ohio State football star Jim Stillwagon has been charged with shooting a motorist in an Ohio road rage incident, police said Monday. Stillwagon, 63, of Columbus, was charged with one count of felonious assault after allegedly shooting a 41-year-old Kettering man in the head after an altercation in Delaware, Ohio, WCHM-TV, Columbus, reported. Bruce Pijanowski of the Delaware Police Department told the broadcaster Stillwagon was riding a motorcycle Sunday when a dispute with the driver of a pickup truck -- identified as Richard Mattingly -- escalated on a highway off-ramp. Police said Stillwagon fired several rounds from a handgun at Mattingly, who was hospitalized but later released. Mattingly told WCHM Stillwagon became angered with him for erratic driving, which he said was the result of mechanical difficulties with his truck. An attorney for the former defensive tackle claimed he acted in self-defense. Stillwagon was released from jail Monday after posting a $350,000 bond with a hearing set for Oct. 10, the broadcaster said. Stillwagon, a two-time All-American, was a key member of the Buckeyes' 1968 and 1970 national championship teams. He later played five years for the CFL's Toronto Argonauts.
