Ferrer solid in 2nd round at Malaysia

No. 1-seeded David Ferrer controlled the later stages of his match Thursday in posting a second-round win at the Malaysian Open tennis tournament. Ferrer took eight of the last 10 games in a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Alex Bogomolov Jr. Even with losing serve once in the second set, Ferrer won 72 percent of the points on serve on the day. His four breaks -- three in the second set -- allowed him to advance. No. 2-seeded Juan Monaco defeated Jimmy Wang 6-4, 7-5 with five breaks and third-seeded Kei Nishikori dominated the second and third sets of a 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-1 decision over Albert Ramos. However, Alejandro Falla ousted fourth-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and Igor Sijsling edged No. 5-seeded Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (7-2). Nikolay Davydenko topped Denis Istomin 7-5, 6-4 in the other second-round match. Ferrer draws Sijsling in Friday's quarterfinals with Falla going against seventh-seeded Julien Benneteau. Nishikori is to play Davydenko next and Monaco meets Vasek Pospisil.
