Australia's Western Force said Sunday they had released winger Alfie Mafi from the remainder of his Super Rugby contract because of disciplinary problems. Force officials said the immediate release of the 24-year-old relates to a number of infringements of team standards. Tongan-born Mafi, who was in the final season of a two-year contract, is scheduled to play in Japanese club rugby later this year. Officials said Mafi was unavailable for selection against the ACT Brumbies last week following "a breach which did not involve any untoward behaviour involving any member of the public or public property". "This side has placed a very strong focus on its standards and earning respect as the foundations for the team culture," RugbyWA chief executive Mark Sinderberry said in a statement. "We acknowledge the contribution Alfie has made to the team over the past three seasons and we wish him all the best for his future rugby endeavours." Mafi played 38 Super Rugby matches for Western Force between 2011 and 2013 and 54 Super Rugby matches in total following previous spells with the NSW Waratahs and ACT Brumbies. From: AFP
