China's double Olympic swimming champion Sun Yang was suspended from competition indefinitely on Tuesday, sports authorities said, after he was given seven days' detention for driving a Porsche without a licence. The Zhejiang College of Sports, with which Sun is affiliated, said it would only consider reinstating him "after a long period of training during which he can abide by the rules". "The punishment is severe but we are doing this for his own good," said the school's vice president, Zhang Yadong, according to the official Xinhua news agency. "We hope he can always be the hero of Chinese sports instead of a sinner." Sun rocketed to stardom after taking gold in the 400m and 1500m freestyle at the 2012 London Olympics, and won three titles at the world championships earlier this year. But the 21-year-old was put under "administrative detention" and fined 2,000 yuan ($330) by police in the eastern city of Hangzhou on Monday after a Porsche Cayenne he was driving collided with a bus. Sun apologised on his official microblog and added that the mistake was due to his "meagre knowledge of the law" because he had been "busy with training" -- an admission that drew anger from Chinese Internet users, who argued that it was "common sense" that driving without a licence was illegal. It is not the first time that Sun has been embroiled in controversy. The Olympic star was previously accused of lacking respect for his long-time coach Zhu Zhigen after refusing his mentor's order to end a relationship with an flight attendant. Source: AFP
