Italy led a comfortable 2-0 over Chile in the first day matches of the 2011 Davis Group World Group series on Friday. In the first match, Italy's Potito Starace, ranked No 50 in the world by the Professional Tennis Association (ATP), took home a comfortable win after beating Chile's Paul Capdeville (101) in four sets 6-3, 6-3, 2-6 and 7-6. Starace dominated most of the game against Capdeville who seemed overwhelmed by the responsibility to be the first player on the greens of the tournament on home soil. In the second match, Italy's Fabio Fognini (39) won over Chile's Fernando Gonzalez (297), who was no match against the Italian. Gonzalez, who at his prime was ranked No 5 in the world, was struggling from the start of the match and withdrew before time in the third set after suffering an injury in his left foot. The 2011 Davis Group World Group will continue on Saturday with matches in the men's doubles where Italy's Simone Bolelli (50) and Daniele Bracciali (27) will face Chile's Nicolas Massu (678) and Jorge Aguilar (173)
