San Diego Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal has been suspended for 50 games after a positive test for banned testosterone, the team said Wednesday. Grandal, 23, a former first-round pick of the Cincinnati Reds who took over as the Padres' starting catcher in mid-season, won't be eligible to play until May 28 under the penalty handed down from Major League Baseball. "We were disappointed to learn of the suspension of Yasmani Grandal for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," the Padres said in a statement. "We fully support (MLB's) policy and its efforts to eliminate performance-enhancing drugs from our game." "I am responsible for what I put into my body," Grandal said. "I must accept responsibility for my actions and serve my suspension." A former star for the University of Miami, Grandal hit .297 with eight homers and 36 RBI over 55 games for the Padres in 2012. He smashed a pair of home runs in his first major league start June 30 against Colorado.
