Bethpage Black, the public course where Tiger Woods won the 2002 US Open, will host the 2024 Ryder Cup and the 2019 PGA Championship, the PGA of America announced Tuesday. The Long Island layout, located about 25 miles (40km) east of New York, was designed by famed course architect A.W. Tillinghast and renovated by Rees Jones in 1997-98. The course has become legendary for people sleeping in cars overnight to grab available tee times as well as for the vocal and emotional fan base in New York, now matched with an event that arouses the passions of golf fans in Europe and America. The Ryder Cup matches have been played in the New York area only once, in 1935 at Ridgewood, New Jersey. In addition to being the site of the eighth of Woods's 14 major triumphs, Bethpage also hosted the 2009 US Open won by American Lucas Glover and last year's US PGA Tour Barclays Championship. Showers drenched the 2009 US Open, forcing a Monday finish, but the PGA Championship is played two months later, in August, when conditions are typically less rainy, and the Ryder Cup is played in late September or early October. Next year's Ryder Cup will be staged at Gleneagles in Scotland with the 2016 edition set for Hazeltime in suburban Minneapolis, the 2018 Ryder Cup booked for Paris and the 2020 installment planned for Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.
