French Open champion Maria Sharapova's preparations for the US Open suffered a setback Thursday as she was ousted from the WTA hardcourt tournament in Montreal by Carla Suarez Navarro.
The 14th-seeded Spaniard, ranked 16th in the world, shrugged off a rain delay and emerged with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 triumph over the fourth-seeded Russian, a former world number one who was playing her first tournament since a surprise fourth-round exit at Wimbledon.
Now Sharapova has just over two weeks to hone her hardcourt game before the start of the year's last Grand Slam, the US Open at Flushing Meadows on August 25.
