Washington - Upi

Ryan Sweeting, inserted into the field as an injury replacement, took a three-set win Monday in the Apia International tennis tournament in Sydney. Sweeting battled Gilles Muller for more than 2 hours before claiming a 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 win. He didn't face a break point after the first set. Sweeting was called into the main draw when sixth-seeded Florian Mayer withdrew with a hip injury. Australian Matthew Ebden posted an upset of seventh-seeded Marcel Granollers with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win. Ebden fought off 9-of-10 break points he faced, including all four of those situations in the third set. Denis Istomin topped Pablo Andujar 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the other match Monday to go three sets. Istomin won 69 percent of the points on serve. Also Monday, Lukasz Kubot beat Ivan Dodig 7-6 (7-4), 7-5; Jarkko Nieminen breezed past James Duckworth 6-2, 6-2; and Bobby Reynolds defeated Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-5, 6-3.
