Detroit - UPI

The Detroit Tigers announced they had extended the contract of manager Jim Leyland and his coaching staff through the 2013 season. Leyland, 67, led the Tigers to the World Series this season and has compiled a 607-528 record in seven seasons. "Jim is as fine a manager as there is in baseball, he has done a fantastic job for the organization, and we are thrilled to have him back managing the Tigers in 2013," team, president and general manager David Dombrowski said in a written statement. Leyland has been a manager for 21 years and leads the Major League in wins by an active manager with 1,676. He said in a statement that Detroit was a "tremendous baseball town, and I couldn't dream of a better place to manage." The club also brought back Leyland's six-member coaching staff as well as Toby Harrah, who joined the Tigers at mid-season as assistant hitting coach, the Detroit Free Press said.
