Wayne Rooney was ruled out of Manchester United's line-up to face Benfica in their Champions League match here Tuesday after failing to recover from an injury sustained against Swansea last weekend. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said Rooney had picked up a "couple of knocks" in Saturday's 1-0 win over the Swans, but the England striker had been expected to recover in time. However Rooney was omitted from the matchday squad as Ferguson revealed his line-up to face the Portuguese giants. Ashley Young and Dimitar Berbatov will spearhead the United attack ahead of a four-man midfield comprising Antonio Valencia, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Nani.
