Member of Fatah’s Central Committee Azam Al Ahmad stressed that there are major obstacles impeding the Palestinian reconciliation and the formation of a national unity government, saying that his government contacted with Qatar to work to eliminate these challenges. He stressed the need for ending the Palestinian division as soon as possible to resolve the problems facing the Palestinian people.
He added, in an interview with “Arabs Today”, that the lack of electricity in Gaza and other problems in the besieged strip would not be resolved, if the current division continued. He blamed the conflict between the Palestinian factions for Gaza’s airport destruction, saying that it is impossible to hold a meeting for the National Council during the current division.
He added that Hamas will not be accepted inside the framework of Palestinian Liberation Organization before ending the Palestinian division.
Regarding the meeting conducted in Moscow, Ahmad said that the meeting was limited to the political side, as Moscow has not invited the other Palestinian factions to discuss the Palestinian reconciliation. He stressed that the Palestinian side refused the attempts to raise the Palestinian internal issues during the meeting.
However, Beirut meeting focused on the necessity to form a new national council, said the Palestinian leader, stressing that such a step could not be achieved with the formation of a national unity government.
He praised the retreatment of U.S President Donald Trump from his decision to transfer the U.S embassy from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem, describing it as a positive signal. He expressed his country’s readiness to face such a decision if implemented.
The Palestinian leadership has a 19-point plan to confront any political steps taken by the US or Israel, including the withdrawal of Palestinian recognition of the Israeli state, supporting the internal situation in Palestine and escalating the popular peaceful resistance against the Israeli occupation.
He stressed their readiness to take these steps to defend the Palestinian rights, expressing his hope that the U.S new administration will take serious steps to push forward the peace process during the coming period, calling the US president for honoring his commitment to exert his efforts to achieve peace between the Palestinians and Israelis
