Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reiterated his commitment to cooperating with U.S. President Donald Trump to reach an historic peace agreement with Israelis, as well as partnering with the U.S. President in counter-terrorism efforts.
Speaking at a joint press conference with President Trump, who began a visit to Palestinian land this morning, Abbas said that Palestinians gaining their independence and freedom is the key to peace and stability in the region and the world.
Abbas said that they are keen on peace based on a two-state solution based on the borders of 1967, with East Jerusalem the capital of Palestine. He added that resolving all issues should be based on international resolutions and bilateral agreements between the Palestinian and Israeli sides. He discussed the suffering of Palestinians on hunger strike in Israeli prisons and said that their requests were fair, calling on Israel to accept those demands.
For his part, Trump said that the U.S. administration looks forward to working with president Abbas on achieving peace and developing the Palestinian economy. He added that achieving peace must be done in an environment free of violence. He stressed that the current US administration will help the two sides reach a permanent solution.
