China's Lin Dan and Li Xuerui, the defending champions in men's and women's singles events, grabbed their second group victories but their mixed doubles teammates Xu Chen/Ma Jin and women's doubles compatriots Luo Ying/Luo Yu suffered bitter losses in the second day's badminton competition at 2016 Rio Olympic Games on Friday.

Two times defending champion Lin came with a little bump in a defeat of Russia's Vladimir Malkov, but it couldn't stop Super Dan's second group victory of 21-18, 21-7.

Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark got off to a strong start, beating Estonia's Raul Must 21-8, 21-15.

Other big names in men's singles including world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, China's Chen Long and Denmark's Viktor Axelsen, will play on Saturday.

Li Xuerui enjoyed an easy win over Belgium's Tan Lianne in a late match which kicked off at 9:30 pm.

Mixed doubles' defending champion Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei of China ensured their place in the quarterfinals by winning their second straight match in Group A.

But Xu Chen/Ma Jin, who were drawn in Group B, were knocked out by Poland's Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba 13-21, 21-9, 21-19.

Mateusiak and Zieba's last Olympics in London ended bitterly as they wasted a match point in the quarterfinals against the Chinese duo.

In the men's doubles, No. 4 seeds Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan of China eased to the quarterfinals with a 21-11, 21-16 win over Germany's Michael Fuchs/Johannes Schoettler in Group B. China's Chai Biao/Hong Wei grabbed a victory against India's Manu Attri/Reddy B. Sumeeth 21-13, 21-15 in Group D.

Top seeds Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong of South Korea survived a difficult encounter against Chinese Taipei's Lee Sheng Mu/Tsai Chia Hsin 18-21, 21-13, 21-18.

In women's doubles, top seeds Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi of Japan defeated Thailand's Sapsiree Taerattanachai/Puttita Supajirakul but China's Luo Ying/Luo Yu lost to South Korea's Jung Kyung Eun/Shin Seung Chan 10-21, 14-21.

China's Yu Yang/Tang Yuanting won their second straight matches with a defeat of Bulgaria's Gabriela Stoeva/Stefani Stoeva 21-14, 21-11.
