Egypt's Zidan to end third spell with Mainz

Egypt striker Mohamed Zidan will not extend his stay with Mainz after rejecting a one-year contract offer from the Bundesliga club, German sports magazine Kicker reports. The 30-year old has had an impressive start to his third stint with Mainz after rejoining them on loan from Borussia Dortmund in January, scoring seven goals to help the club avoid relegation to second division. Zidan left Bundesliga champions Dortmund in the January transfer window in search of more regular first-team football than he found with Mainz. Mainz turned down the option of extending Zidan's contract until 2014 offering only to keep his services for another year, a deal the Egyptian showed little appetite for. "Zidan has rejected [the contract] and we are not going to negotiate any further," Mainz's general manager Christian Heidel was quoted as saying by Kicker. "The plan did work out, although he made a huge contribution towards us avoiding relegation. "We have had three fantastic short spells with Zidan but now it all comes down to a long-term collaboration. "Money was never an issue, it was purely the length of the contract." The Pharaohs star is now free to sign for any other club when his current contract with Dortmund runs out at the end of June. From/ahram
