Manchester United defender Fabio da Silva has signed a season-long loan with Premier League rivals Queens Park Rangers, on the same day it was announced twin brother Rafael signed a new contract that will keep him at Old Trafford for another four years. Fabio, who can play on either side of the back four, has played 53 first-team matches for United but has rarely been a first-choice starter. By contrast, Rafael has made 90 appearances for United since the brothers arrived at Old Trafford from Brazilian club Fluminense in 2008. Nevertheless QPR manager Mark Hughes, who as a striker played for United under long-serving boss Sir Alex Ferguson, was delighted to be bringing Fabio to the west London club, who escaped relegation on the final day of last season. "It's a great opportunity for us to loan a good, young player, who has decent experience of playing for a top club like Manchester United," said Hughes. Fabio, who will meet-up with his new team-mates on his 22nd birthday on Monday, said: "The loan is so important for me in terms of my career. I want to play as many games as possible here. I want to play well and win games as well." But Rafael is not going anywhere after signing a new contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until the end of the 2015/16 season. "Rafael is one of the club's brightest young prospects; he has no fear of playing and has great belief in himself," Ferguson told United's website. "The boy has developed immensely since joining United, his energy and enthusiasm are a joy to watch. "Rafael has all the attributes to become one of the best full-backs in the world and I am delighted he has signed a new contract." Meanwhile Rafael said: "I am so happy to sign a new contract. I love playing for Manchester United, there is a great team spirit here and a real desire to win. "My time here has been unbelievable; winning two league titles, a league cup and a Club World Cup has made me hungry for more trophies. "I would like to thank Sir Alex for his belief in me and I would also like to thank the fans for their support," added Rafael. United finished runners-up in the Premier League last season, just losing out on goal difference to champions and local rivals Manchester City.
