Marseille - AFP

Stade Phoceen, the one-time French club of former All Black star Jonah Lomu, has gone into administration, it was announced on Friday. Lomu played for Stade -- who compete in the Federale 1 (third) division -- when they were known as Marseille-Vitrolles in 2009. The New Zealander was 34 years old at the time and, at the tail end of his career, only played a few games for the club. Stade's demise follows weeks of uncertainty over its future. Around 40 employees including 30 players are expected to be let go in the coming weeks. Lomu was diagnosed in 1995 with the rare kidney disorder nephrotic syndrome, and underwent a transplant in 2004 after receiving an organ donation from friend and New Zealand radio broadcaster Grant Kereama. Last month the All Black legend was hospitalised for 16 days after suffering kidney failure, during which he was treated with daily dialysis as doctors at Auckland Hospital's renal unit tried to to repair the kidney.
