Michel today vowed to put struggling Sevilla back "where they belong" after being unveiled as their new coach. The former Real Madrid midfielder has been handed the reins of the Primera Division outfit until the end of the season, with the option of a further year at the helm should he guide them to a UEFA Champions League berth. Michel, 48, takes charge with the club lying 11th in the standings after a seven-game winless run, which prompted the dismissal of Marcelino Garcia Toral yesterday. Speaking at a press conference also attended by Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido, Michel said: "My message is very clear: we have three months of competition and I am tremendously excited that Sevilla gets where they belong. "For our part, we are convinced that this situation will reverse. I am optimistic by nature, but also realistic. We cannot do anything if we think we are the champions - we have to prove this the field." Despite the side's recent struggles, Michel is confident he has the players at his disposal to close the six-point gap to fourth place and the last Champions League position. "My impression is that it is very good. This team has the resources," he said. "But we all need a little more and if the players are able to understand this, the team will change their attitude, level of play and results. The first-team players need to realise their situation and push together." Michel will need to work quickly to lift the Sevilla camp, with Marcelino leaving the club just four points above the relegation zone in the congested standings. The Andalusian side have picked up just two points from the last 21 on offer, and on Sunday were beaten 2-1 at home by relegation-threatened Villarreal.
