One person, a 55-year old woman, died and 65 others were injured Wednesday morning in the accident of the electric train linking Algiers and Thenia some 150 m away of Hussein-Dey station, according to a new toll of the civil defense.
A previous toll of the same department reported one person dead and 53 others injured, including one in a serious condition.
Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal, accompanied by the Minister of Health, Population and Hospital Reform Abdelmmalek Boudiaf had visited the scene immediately after the accident.
Abdelmalek Sellal inquired about the causes of the accident and the condition of the injured.
The electric train Algiers-Thenia should be transferred to Hussein Dey station to yield to the rapid train Algiers-Oran. For reasons to be defined by a technical team of the SNTFn, the tree cars of the train veered off track at 8:10 a.m.
The two other cars of the train were completely damaged while another car fell to the right side, in a pile of crumpled sheets, APS noticed on the scene.
Several members of the civil protection, rescue teams and forensic experts of Algiers Police Department were deployed.
The SNTF, which expended ''condolences'' to the family of the deceased and wished “a speedy recovery to the wounded” stressed that a committee of inquiry was dispatched to '' determine the exact causes the circumstances and responsibilities of this unfortunate accident.''All rail traffic was suspended in the suburbs of Algiers. '' It should gradually resume tomorrow, '' according to an official of SNTF.
