5.5 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia’s Papua

An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale jolted the southeastern part of Sarmi district, Papua province, according to Indonesia’s News Agency (Antara). According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicentre of the earthquake was located at 2.60 degrees southern latitude and 138.82 degrees western longitude, approximately 80 kilometres southeast of Sarmi, 208 km southwest of Jayapura city, Papua, and 3,850 km northeast of Jakarta. The earthquake was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami.
