Volcano experts in Alaska said ash in the air over the Shelikof Straight was from an eruption nearly 100 years ago. The National Weather Service in Anchorage said the ash reported in the air Tuesday above Shelikof Straight and parts of Kodiak Island was from the Novarupta explosion in 1912 and was carried into the air by strong northerly winds, KMXT-FM, Kodiak, Alaska, reported Thursday. Experts said a lack of snow cover in the Valley of 10,000 Smokes and Katmai National Park left the ash free to be carried by the wind. The weather service issued a warning to pilots about potential engine damage from the volcanic ash.
