China on Wednesday again voiced its opposition to the development of nuclear weapons in any Middle East country. "China opposes nuclear proliferation and doesn't approve of any Middle East country developing nuclear weapons," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at the daily press briefing. Hong's comments came one day after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in its latest report that credible evidence showed Iran has engaged in projects and experiments relevant to the development of nuclear weapons. Saying China is still studying the IAEA's report, Hong said Iran, as a member of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), should fulfill relevant international obligations. Hong said China has always maintained that the Iran nuclear issue should be resolved through dialogue and cooperation. Resuming talks between Iran and the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany is a top priority, along with stepping up cooperation between IAEA and Iran, Hong said, adding that this is the appropriate approach for seeking a comprehensive, long-term and proper settlement of the Iran nuclear issue. "We expect the IAEA to take a fair and objective stance and commit itself to working with Iran to clarify related issues," Hong said. Hong also urged Iran to show flexibility and sincerity and to work earnestly with the IAEA. "All parties should do more to promote dialogue and cooperation," Hong said. Hong said avoiding new turmoil in the Middle East is in the common interests of the Middle East countries and the international community. China will be highly responsible in matters concerning the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and the Middle East's peace and stability, and will maintain communications with relevant parties and the IAEA, Hong said. China will unswervingly push forward dialogue and cooperation and play a constructive role in diplomatic efforts to peacefully resolve the issue, Hong said.
