Earthquake hits southwestern Siberia

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake has struck southwestern Siberia in Russia, the U.S. Geological survey reported. The epicenter of the temblor, which struck at 10:21 a.m. EST, was 59 miles east of Kyzyl, 2,326 miles east-northeast of Moscow, the USGS said on its Web site. The depth was 4.2 miles. No injuries or damage were reported. "Everything is all right. Our dispatchers work round the clock and they did not receive any calls on any destruction," a spokesman for the regional Emergencies Ministry told RIA Novosti. Local residents were being warned about the possibility of aftershocks and were advised to leave their homes, he said. A spokesman for the MRSK Siberia power grid company said power supplies in the region were not interrupted by the quake.
