An earthquake measuring 5.6 magnitude on the Richter Scale jolted south Taiwan on Saturday morning. No casualties were reported.
The quake occurred 19 kilometers south of the city of Tainan on Taiwan’s southwestern coast, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported. It hit at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Taiwan's weather authority said the quake occurred off the coast of neighboring Tainan city, where 117 people were killed after a building collapsed in a strong earthquake on February 6 last year.
Electricity and water supply were temporarily cut in some areas of Tainan following the quake, but soon resumed, according to local authorities. Minor aftershocks were monitored both in Tainan and Kaohsiung.
