In line with Dubai municipality's plan for zero waste emission for the year 2030, the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) organised yesterday a lecture on 'Waste Management and Recycling' by Eng. Hassan Mohammed Makki, director of sewerage and irrigation network department and former director of waste management department at the Municipality. The lecture is part of EEG's community outreach program to encourage sustainable living, education and business development . ?Zero waste production is attainable with the implementation of suitable strategies and the multiplication of awareness campaigns' confirms Eng. Hassan Mohammed Makki in his presentation. Eng. Makki points the need to concentrate on the top of the diagram where prevention, minimisation, reuse, recycling and energy recovery solutions come before disposal. He also gave beautiful insights during the lecture on what could be done in the future and some of the strategies the municipality is working on implementing. He added by giving an informative tour on effective waste management solutions currently in place in the world on individual, corporate and governmental level, which motivated the audience to go forward and do their share of the work whether in their homes, offices or in the streets. This lecture is part of a series of many lectures that EEG conducts every year along with other accomplishments. More than 1000 corporations are involved in its waste management collection campaigns and more than 2.500.000 kg of Aluminium cans, paper, plastic and glass and around 55000 pieces of toner, battery and mobile phones are collected. Water conservation and climate change have been the topics of 2012 student and teacher's workshops as well as school and college public speaking and drawing competitions, through its ?Every Drop Matters' campaign, in partnership with UNDP and CocaCola. The tree planting programme under the slogan ?One root, One Communi-Tree' is growing unabated with a total number of trees planted till end of December standing at 468, reaching since inception the number of 2,117,906 planted trees. A great accomplishment worth mentioning is EEG achieving and exceeding its target in its 11th annual ?Clean up UAE' drive at 112 Sites as more than 42,000 volunteers joined hands and participated in the event. EEG managed to collect more than 193 tons of waste from all the locations. This has been yet another milestone for EEG and a great accomplishment to its goal of working for a better environment.
