A magnitude-7.2 quake on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Vanuatu to the south of the Pacific Ocean.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that the quake struck about 535 kilometres south-east of Vanuatu at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres. There were no initial reports of casualties or damage.
