More than 240,000 volunteers took part Saturday in a national clean-up day in Romania, organized as part of the "Let's do it, world" movement launched in 2008 by Estonia, organizers said. "We are pleased that so many people responded to our call to clean Romania," Ana-Maria Hancu, an organiser, told AFP, adding that more than 380,000 trash bags had been filled by mid-afternoon. Students, teachers, civil servants, employees of private companies and military police were among the volunteers, and about 800 inmates accompanied by wardens also joined in. Organizers said they had counted some 4,450 illegal dumps, mainly in forests and on river banks, that needed to be cleaned. In 2010, some 200,000 Romanian volunteers took part in a similar action.
