A strong earthquake has jolted Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan's southwestern region of Kyushu.
The quake struck Yatsushiro City shortly after 10 PM on Sunday. It had an intensity of 5-minus on Japan's seismic scale of zero to 7, Japan's Radio NHK World reported.
Tremors with an intensity of up to 3 were also felt in other parts of Kyushu.
The Japan Meteorological Agency estimates the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.3. The agency said the quake's focus was 7 kilometers beneath the surface.
This is the first time since April 19th that Kumamoto has been rocked by a quake with an intensity of 5-minus or higher.
Yatsushiro was also struck by an intensity-3 quake shortly before 11 PM on the same day.
Kyushu has been hit by a series of quakes since April. The agency is calling on people in the region to stay on the alert for quakes.
