The town of La Frontera on the north coast of the island of El Hierro suffered an earthquake of 3.7 on the Richter scale early on Sunday. The quake, which occurred at 3:15 local time on the most westerly of the Spanish controlled Canary Islands, was situated at a depth of 21 km below the ground. It was one of the seven tremors between 1.6 and 3.3 on the Richter scale that have shaken the island over the past 24 hours. The latest activity comes over a week after the undersea volcano situated off the south coast of El Hierro ended its second eruption. The first eruption began on Oct. 10 and lasted for around 10 days and the second for a similar period of time. Residents from the village of La Restinga were evacuated from their homes on both occasions. Although the new activity hints at a possible eruption off the north coast of the island, the regional government will not take action for the moment. The calm on El Hierro was shown by the fact that all the polling stations on the island for Sunday's Spanish General Elections were open as expected.
