Sanctri announced today the creation of a Sanctri, or memorial page, to celebrate the life and legacy of poet Maya Angelou, who died this morning, 5/28/14, at age 86.
During her lifetime, Maya Angelou was called “the poet laureate of women” and “the spokeswoman for African-American people.” But she was so much more than that. She wrote books of poetry, screenplays, and seven autobiographical novels including I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. She was the poet laureate for all Americans, both black and white, and the spokeswoman for all Americans too.
We will always have her poetry to make us think and to make us feel, but when we lose a singular, influential voice like Maya Angelou’s, the grief an entire nation shares can be devastating. Maya’s Sanctri on Facebook offers everyone the opportunity to express their feelings to each other, friends and loved ones. In fact, the very act of sharing strong emotions has been shown to have therapeutic value – as exemplified in the response to Maya’s own poetry by those who have suffered racial injustice, gender-based discrimination, or hatred of any kind.
The public is invited to contribute to Maya Angelou’s memorial, using the free Sanctri app on Facebook. By joining the community and adding memories of Maya, from YouTube videos reading her poems to personal tales of inspiration, we will all help weave the story of what Maya Angelou meant to the world. And by making a donation in her memory through Sanctri, we can all help her name and her words live on.
