The Arab League on Friday greeted Yemeni people on the Nobel Prize Committee''s choosing Yemeni activist Tawakul Karman . The Arab League greeted the leading role by the Activist Karman in her peaceful struggle for the protection of the Yemeni and Arab women''s rights , as well as her efforts for democracy-building and establishment of the principles of human rights and peace in Yemen. The Arab league said in a statement on Friday that the international honouring of the activist Karman is a tribute to her, Yemeni and Arab women in their quest to gain equal opportunities to influence and participate actively in their communities and to put an end to the marginalization suffered by women. The awardis an international recognition of the pivotal role of Arab women in building democracy, promoting peace, defending social justice and leading development efforts in their societies, the statement added. The statement stressed that the Arab League will continue its support to empower women and protect their political, economic and social rights. The Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo awarded the coveted prize to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, human rights activist Leymah Gbowee, also from Liberia, and Yemen''s human rights and democracy campaigner Tawakkul Karman "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women''s rights to full participation in peace-building work."
