On Thursday, 24 October, Egyptian band El Dor El Awal will perform at Azhar Park's El Genaina Theatre. El Dor El Awal was founded in 1999 when bass guitarist Ahmed Omar and violinist Mohamed Samy decided to form a band after a casual jamming session together. The name El Dor El Awal, which means 'the first floor', comes from the first floor Downtown flat where the band members used to practice. The band includes four additional members and features a variety of sounds and instruments: different forms of percussion, keyboards, the qanun, the saxophone, and, occasionally, the flute. El Dor El Awal play instrumental tunes that infuse world influences with traditional Egyptian beats, categorising their music as 'oriental jazz'. Their first album, Qarar Izala (Decision to Demolish), was released in 2006, while their second, Aa'tareeq (On the Road), came out in 2009.
