The Turkish cinema, guest of honour of the 8th International Arab Film Festival of Oran (FIOFA), made a remarkable entrance with the screening Tuesday, in Oran, of Yilmaz Erdogan’s film “The Butterfly’s Dream.”
Screened outside the competition and in the original version with English subtitles, this work was beautiful to see. From the outset, the audience was attracted by the quality of the image and the actors’ acting.
“The Butterfly’s Dream” is inspired from a true story of two young poets Rüstü Onur and Muzaffer Tayyip Uslu who lived in the forties in the Turkish mining city of Zonguldak.
The life of these two romantics will change radically following their meeting with the young secondary school girl Suzan, who becomes their muse.
In this Turkish small city, the two young poets, who contracted tuberculosis and died, tried to survive and publish their poems, in a context where love merges with death.
The film was proposed by Turkey to compete at the Oscar’s Best Foreign Language Film in 2013. It was the subject of a promotional campaign in the United States of America and was considered as the “most popular” film of 2013.
