Most agree that the women’s rights movement has made tremendous progress in the past 50-years. However, current events such as the increasing gender pay gap show and the NFL’s domestic abuse policy illuminate that there is still work to be done.
Author Linda Powers-Daniel believes that empowering women begins with a positive portrayal of females in popular culture. She makes a point of positioning strong, independent women as protagonists in her novels.
“By increasing the number of female role models, we can begin to begin to alter the global perception of women,” Powers-Daniel said.
Powers-Daniel’s new book, “Coloring for Dark” is an inspirational allegory of her mother. The novel, set in Southern Appalachia, is the story of a family of girls who launch themselves on a quest to solve their father’s murder.
Through their journey, the girls learn of their father’s turbulent past as well as the secrets he forced their mother to keep. Their story, filled with dark, light and all shades in between, is one of determination, survival, secrets, love and redemption.
