We've come to expect plots packed with deceit and theft from best-selling crime writer Val McDermid - but this is the first time the hero is both a pirate and a granny! McDermid’s first children’s story draws on her own favourite book - Treasure Island - with a wonderfully resourceful granny who plunders the seven seas, terrorising other pirate ships with her crew of renegades, including a talking parrot and a grog-slurping dog called Jolly Roger. But she keeps this a secret as at the end of the day she still has time to change back into her comfy slippers for a rest in her rocking chair. This verse adventure is enormous fun, rollicking along with great energy, and is matched by suitably manic and detailed illustrations. Worth every doubloon.
