Rabat’s Council of Municipalities Group, Al-Assima, approved on Thursday January 12, the extension of the Rabat–Salé tramline by a total of seven kilometers, with expansion happening in both directions.

In Salé, the line will be extended for 4.6 km, from Hassan II station to Zarbia avenue, reaching the under construction of the provincial hospital in Al-Hssaine district.

In Rabat, the line will be extended for 2.4 km, starting from Moulay Youssef Hospital in Akkari area to Al Kifah Avenue, in Yaâcoub Al Mansour district.

Valued at MAD 1.715 billion, the project will be funded by contracted parties, with 51% divided among the Al-Assima groups, whose contribution is MAD 180 million, Bourgreg Valley’s administration with MAD 100 million and the Fund of Urban and Interurban Road Transport Reform with MAD 592 million.  The remaining budget will be supplied by appropriations.

The extension is designed to connect neighborhoods with a high concentration of population to industrial areas in the city and its surrounding areas.

According to a communiqué issued by Al-Assima, on Friday, the Council has also approved a technical assistance agreement between the consortium and the Rabat-Salé Tramway Company (STRS), in order to follow up on the transport projects in accordance with the partnership agreement set between Al-Assima and Morocco’s Ministry of Interior.

In 2015, the council also approved the extension of line 2 of the Rabat-Salé tramway by 2.3 kilometers on the side of the Akarri neighborhood.
