The European Neighbourhood Policy & Enlargement Negotiations Commissioner in the European Union, Johannes Hahn, on Sunday said that the EU will continue its economic support to Jordan to enable it to overcome challenges and carry out its role in the region.
Hahn made the remarks during a lecture on Jordanian-European relations in the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy, organized by the Jordan Institute of Diplomacy (JID) in cooperation with the European Union. The lecture was attended by EU Ambassador to Jordan, Joanna Wronecka, JID's director Omar Rifai, a number of ambassadors in Jordan.
The EU official said that his visit to Jordan comes as part of his tenure as commissioner in charge of the European Neighbourhood Policy and Negotiations aimed at enlarging the EU. The visit, he added, aims to identify challenges facing Jordan, express the EU's support to the Kingdom to deal with the turbulence in the region and to identify the challenges that the European Neighbourhood Policy is facing in the light of developments in the region.
Commissioner Hahn affirmed that Jordan enjoys an advanced status in the context of the Neighbourhood Policy of the EU, pointing out that the stability of the Kingdom and the region is crucial to the EU.
Hahn praised Jordan's policy and role in the region, mainly dealing with the Syrian crisis and hosting refugees.
Meanwhile, the EU Ambassador to Jordan, Joanna Wronecka, reiterated the EU support to Jordan in programs and projects, especially spreading the Amman Message abroad.
Earlier, Hahn, the Austrian politician who assumed his current position in November 2014, pointed out that the next five years will be a phase of strengthening ties between the EU countries, and closer cooperation in the economic and political frameworks for the EU's neighbors in the east and south.
