Volvo Trucks will introduce a dual-shift clutch transmission for heavy trucks this fall, the company said on Tuesday.
"When driving it feels like you have access to two gearboxes. When one gear is selected in one gearbox, the next gear is already prepared in the other," Astrid Drewsen, product manager for drivelines, said in a press release.
With dual clutches, gear changes take place without any interruption in power delivery. As a result, engine torque is maintained and driving comfort is significantly improved, he added.
Drewsen said Volvo will be the first company to market a dual clutch system for heavy trucks.
"The heavier the truck, the more efficient the dual clutch system is and that it will make it easier to transport animal and liquid cargoes since it mean a smoother ride," she said.
In addition, the system is designed to help prevent trucks getting stuck on slippery or steep roads.
The dual system consumes the same amount of fuel as a regular clutch transmission, Drewsen added.
Similar transmission systems are already available for passenger cars.
Volvo Trucks is owned by Volvo Group. The company is not connected to the Volvo car company. Volvo Group also makes construction equipments and marine power systems.
