Tokyo shares opened higher Tuesday with market concerns eased by a halt in the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 11.96 points, or 0.07 percent, from Monday to 17,049.59.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 3.70 points, or 0.28 percent, to 1,347.55.
Gainers were led by banking, oil and coal product, and insurance issues.
