Tokyo stocks closed lower Tuesday as the yen's appreciation against the US dollar and a retreat of prices for cruse oil created a dour market mood and saw investors offload issues.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 100.83 points, or 0.61%, from Monday to close the day at 16,497.36. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 6.12 points, or 0.47%, to finish at 1,297.56.
Notable issues that lost ground by the close of play comprised insurance, iron and steel and mining-linked stocks and the day's turnover was 1,818.1 billion yen.
