Tokyo stocks advanced Wednesday morning as investor sentiment was bolstered by yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar after a surge following the possibility the U.S. Federal Reserve may hike its interest rate in September.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 83.38 points, or 0.50 percent, from Tuesday to 16,679.89.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 5.34 points, or 0.41 percent, at 1,303.81.
Notable issues that advanced by the morning break comprised mining, iron and steel, and insurance-related stocks.
