Risking open warfare with the government, CBI director John Cridland hit back against last month's anti-business tirade from politicians and appeared to single out Mr Cable for criticism. "There are bits of Government which don't seem to get the fact that the growth narrative is priority one, two and three. They seem to carry on as if their bit of public policy was unrelated to the overall priority of growth," he said. "The whole of Government has got to be joined up on the fact that the UK is open for business and we have a growth plan that will secure the living standards of our children and grandchildren. There can't be secretaries of state in the Cabinet who are exemptions to that." Asked if he was referring to Liberal Democrats, Mr Cridland said: "I won't name who they are." Mr Cable is widely seen as the most anti-business member of the Cabinet, following his comments in 2010 that bankers were "spivs and gamblers", that "capitalism kills competition where it can", and his pledge to shine "a harsh light into the murky world of corporate behaviour".
