Baghdad - XINHUA

Eight people were killed and 25 wounded in separate attacks in Iraq on Monday, police said. Three workers at a carpentry shop were shot dead by gunmen in eastern the city of Mosul, some 400 km north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, a local police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. Separately, a roadside bomb went off near a police patrol in Sumer neighborhood in eastern Mosul, killing a policeman and wounding two others, while a civilian was shot dead by gunmen in western the city, the source said. Furthermore, a child and a civilian were killed when a roadside bomb exploded near a police patrol at al-B'aj area, some 120 km west of Mosul, a local police source said. Meanwhile, a roadside bomb went off near the house of a policeman in the same area, wounding the policeman and five civilians, the source said. In Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, a civilian was killed and two others wounded in a roadside bomb explosion near a civilian car near the provincial capital city of Baquba, a provincial police source anonymously told Xinhua. A policeman was wounded when a roadside bomb struck his patrol near the town of Hibhib, some 20 km northwest of Baquba, the source said. Elsewhere, seven policemen were wounded when a roadside bomb hit their patrol in the city Dujail, some 60 km north of Baghdad, a local police officer told Xinhua. In addition, a motorcycle bomb detonated at a popular market in the city of Tuz-Khurmato, about 200 km north of Baghdad, the police said. Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in recent years, which raises fears that the country is sliding back to a full-blown civil conflict that peaked in 2006 and 2007, when monthly death toll sometimes exceeded 3,000. The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq recently reported that over 1,000 Iraqis were killed and more than 2,300 wounded in acts of terrorism and violence in July, the deadliest month in more than five years.
