British pop outfit Depeche Mode has cancelled its concert in Ukraine due to the "current civil unrest and instability in Kiev," the electronic music band said on its website.Ukraine's capital was swept by deadly clashes last week that left nearly 100 dead, prompting rapid-fire political changes that culminated in the ousting of president Viktor Yanukovych over the weekend.Depeche Mode were due to perform for fans on Wednesday at the International Exhibition Centre in Kiev, and their concert had been widely advertised in the weeks preceding the unrest."The safety and security of the band, crew and fans is the highest priority, and at this time it is not possible to ensure a safe and enjoyable concert experience for everyone involved," the eighties icons said on their website."The band's thoughts are with the Ukrainians during this challenging period and they sincerely look forward to the next time they can perform for the fans in Kiev and Ukraine."The political changes gripping Ukraine cap more than three months of protests against Yanukovych's rule, sparked by his November decision to spurn an historic pact with the European Union in favour of closer ties with Russia.
