Earl was upgraded from tropical storm to hurricane status Wednesday as it glided across the Caribbean and started lashing northern Central America, the US-based National Hurricane Center said.

An "aircraft just reached Earl and measured maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour (120 kilometers per hour), indicating that Earl is now a hurricane," the center posted in its latest bulletin.
