Latvia's parliament on Wednesday elected Defence Minister Raimonds Vejonis as the Baltic state's new president with 55 of its 100 legislators backing the Green party politician in a secret ballot.
"I'll do my best to continue my work to improve Latvia's security and promote the welfare of the country as a whole," the 48-year-old Vejonis told parliament after the result of the fifth round of voting was announced.
